Okay, so today I wanted to mess around with the “Dark One’s Blessing” thing in Baldur’s Gate 3. I’d heard some chatter about it, and figured, why not give it a shot?
First off, I booted up the game and loaded my latest save. My character, a warlock, was all set to go. I was under the impression that Dark One’s Blessing was supposed to give you some temporary HP whenever you killed something. Sounds simple enough, right?
I ventured into a nearby dungeon, full of nasty goblins. I started blasting away with Eldritch Blast, which is my go-to. I took down one goblin, and boom, I saw the little Dark One’s Blessing icon pop up. I checked my health, and sure enough, there were some extra temporary hit points. Cool, cool.
But here’s where it got a little weird. I had also cast Armor of Agathys earlier, which is another spell that gives you temporary HP. I noticed that whenever I killed something and triggered Dark One’s Blessing, it seemed to override the Armor of Agathys. I was like, “What the heck?” I thought they were supposed to be separate, but apparently not.
- I tried a few different things, like killing enemies with different spells, but no luck.
- Dark One’s Blessing always seemed to take priority over Armor of Agathys.
- I even tried looking for a way to toggle it off in the passives menu, but I couldn’t find anything.
I also noticed something else. If an enemy died to the agonizing blast portion of my Eldritch Blast, my temp HP did not reset. Like, what’s up with that? It was pretty annoying. I killed something and I saw the Dark One’s Blessing, but it didn’t seem to work the way I expected.
So, after a couple of hours of experimenting, I came to the conclusion that Dark One’s Blessing is a bit finicky. It’s cool when it works, but it’s not very consistent, especially when you have other temporary HP sources.
Honestly, I’m not sure if it’s worth it. It’s kind of a gamble. Sometimes it’s great, other times it’s just…meh. I guess it depends on your playstyle. If you like living on the edge, maybe it’s for you. But for me, I think I’ll stick to something a bit more reliable.
Anyway, that’s my experience with Dark One’s Blessing. It was a bit of a rollercoaster, but hey, that’s Baldur’s Gate 3 for you. Always keeping you on your toes! Hope that helps anybody thinking about using it.
