Okay, so I’ve been meaning to upgrade my movie collection for a while now. I’m a huge fan of the classic Universal Monsters, you know, Dracula, Frankenstein, all those guys. I finally decided to take the plunge and get the Universal Classic Monsters: Icons of Horror Collection in 4K.
First, I went ahead and searched for it online at different stores. I found that Target had it in stock, and I could even do same-day delivery, which was a huge plus. So, I placed the order through the Target app – super easy, by the way.
While I was waiting for it to arrive, I started doing a bit of research. I mean, I already had these movies on Blu-ray, so I wanted to see if the 4K upgrade was really worth it. From what I read, 4K has four times the resolution of regular Blu-ray, which means way more detail and a much clearer picture. Supposedly, it’s supposed to make it feel more like watching it in a theater. Also the articles mentioned that these were four of the most treasured classic monster movies that Universal owned. So I got my hopes up for sure.
But there was one catch. To actually play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, you need a special Ultra HD Blu-ray player. My old player wouldn’t cut it. Luckily, I had already thought about that and picked up a new player a few weeks ago. But this could potentially be something I should have considered before purchasing.
Anyway, the collection finally arrived later that day. The box set includes eight movies, all the big ones from 1931 to 1954. I’m talking about eight classic movies in a limited edition packaging! I was stoked!
Here’s the full list:
- Dracula (1931)
- Frankenstein (1931)
- The Mummy (1932)
- The Invisible Man (1933)
- The Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
- Werewolf of London (1935)
- Son of Frankenstein (1939)
- The Wolf Man (1941)
I decided to start with Dracula, obviously. I popped the 4K disc into my new player, dimmed the lights, and hit play. And wow, the difference was immediately noticeable. Even though it’s an old black and white movie, the picture quality was insane. It felt like I was seeing it for the first time. Everything was so crisp and clear, and the details were incredible. I could see every little shadow and every strand of Bela Lugosi’s slicked-back hair. It was good, really good.
I’ve been slowly making my way through the rest of the movies, and they all look amazing. It’s definitely worth the upgrade if you’re a fan of these classics. And with Halloween coming up, it’s the perfect time to revisit them. I’ve got to say, this 4K collection is the real deal. I’m so glad I decided to get it!
