Hey everyone, so I’ve been getting into this whole “Conan the Barbarian” thing lately. You know, the big, muscly dude from Cimmeria? Yeah, that guy. I was pretty fascinated by this Hyborian Age stuff and got inspired, so I thought, “Why not try drawing him?”
I started by looking up some artwork online. I mean, there’s a ton of it! Comics, drawings, the whole shebang. I found this one piece by an artist named Frank Frazetta, which was apparently the cover for a “Conan the Adventurer” book. It looked really cool, and I wanted to do something like that.
I spent some time just browsing through images on Pinterest, DeviantArt, you name it. There are so many talented artists out there who’ve drawn Conan. I saved a bunch of them to use as inspiration. I also stumbled upon some speed art videos on how to draw Conan. Those were pretty helpful, gave me a sense of how to start and what the process looked like.
Getting Started
So, armed with my trusty sketchbook and pencil, I started sketching. I tried to capture that raw, powerful look that Conan has. I focused on getting the basic shapes right first. You know, the broad shoulders, the muscular arms, the whole warrior vibe. It wasn’t easy, let me tell you!
I erased and redrew lines a million times. It felt like I was sculpting with my pencil, trying to bring this character to life on paper. I’d pause the videos, study the images I’d saved, and then go back to my drawing, making adjustments here and there.
The Struggle is Real
Honestly, there were moments where I wanted to just throw my pencil across the room. Getting the proportions right, making him look dynamic and not stiff, capturing that intensity in his eyes…it was a real challenge. But, I kept at it. I figured, even if it didn’t turn out perfect, it was a learning experience.
Finally Done
After a few hours, I finally had something I was kinda proud of. It wasn’t a masterpiece or anything, but it was definitely Conan. I showed it to my friend, and he recognized him right away, so that was a good sign!
I might try inking it later, or maybe even adding some color. But for now, I’m just happy I managed to draw something that resembled the Cimmerian warrior. It was a fun experiment, and I definitely learned a lot about drawing muscles and dynamic poses.
Here’s what I did, step-by-step:
- Searched for “Conan the Barbarian” artwork online.
- Found a piece by Frank Frazetta that I liked.
- Looked for inspiration on Pinterest and DeviantArt.
- Watched some speed art videos on how to draw Conan.
- Started sketching, focusing on basic shapes and proportions.
- Erased and redrew a lot until I was happy with the sketch.
- Showed it to a friend to make sure it looked like Conan.
It was a cool little project. If you’re into Conan or just want to practice drawing muscular characters, give it a shot! It’s a fun challenge.
