Okay, so the other day I was thinking, I really enjoyed “How to Train Your Dragon,” right? I mean, who wouldn’t? That movie’s got everything – dragons, Vikings, a bit of a coming-of-age story. So I got to wondering, what else is out there that’s kinda like it?
First thing I did, I started doing some digging online. You know, just browsing around to see what people were saying on forums and movie sites. I typed in stuff like “movies like How to Train Your Dragon” into the search bar. It felt like I was sifting through a mountain of suggestions.
One movie that kept popping up was “Kung Fu Panda”. I’ve seen it before, of course, but it’d been a while. People were saying it had a similar vibe – you know, the whole unlikely hero, mastering a skill, saving the day thing. And it’s also set in ancient China, so there’s that connection too.
- “Kung Fu Panda (2008)” – This one was a no-brainer. I remembered loving it when it first came out.
Then I started looking into the “How to Train Your Dragon” sequels. I saw that “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” was released in Australia on January 3, 2019, and in the United States on February 22. I was surprised I didn’t see this film when it came out. Also, “How to Train Your Dragon” was scheduled to be released by Universal Pictures on June 13, 2025, including engagements in RealD 3D and IMAX. I also realized that this movie was delayed due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. But after I watched the trailer, I definitely decided to watch it.
I noticed that many people are talking about how the third movie is about growing up and putting away childish things. It seems Hiccup gets married to his childhood sweetheart Astrid, has children, and says goodbye to his best friend. The thought made me sad, but I still want to see this movie.
I also read that animated films rarely get a sequel, let alone a trilogy, so the fact that “How to Train Your Dragon” has three movies says a lot. I realized I’d kinda slept on these, and it was time to catch up.
My Watchlist
So, after all that searching and reading, here’s what I’ve added to my watchlist:
- How to Train Your Dragon 2 – Gotta see what happens after the first movie, obviously.
- How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World – The final chapter! I’m ready for some emotional moments.
- Kung Fu Panda (again) – Time for a rewatch, I think.
I’m pretty excited to dive back into these worlds. It’s amazing how one movie can lead you down a whole path of discovery. You start with a simple question and end up with a whole list of things to watch. And who knows, maybe after I watch these, I’ll find even more movies to add to the list! It’s a never-ending cycle, but hey, I’m not complaining.
