Oh boy, let me tell you about my recent deep dive into the “Fantastic Four” extended edition. I’d seen the theatrical release ages ago, and I gotta say, it didn’t really blow my skirt up. But I heard whispers of an extended cut, and being the superhero film nerd that I am, I had to check it out.
First things first, I went on a hunt to find this extended edition. It’s available on HBO Max, and they say it came out on July 1. I dug around and grabbed my copy. Finally, the treasure was in my hands! I popped it in, expecting maybe a few extra minutes of footage. Boy, was I in for a surprise!
This thing is a whole different beast. We’re talking about an extended edition that really fleshes out the characters. I always felt the original was a bit rushed, you know? Like they were trying to cram too much into a standard movie length. But this version? It’s like they finally let the characters breathe.
I was especially stoked about the added scenes for Reed and Sue. In the theatrical cut, their relationship felt a little…underdeveloped, I guess? But here, you get a real sense of their history, their connection. It made their whole dynamic so much more believable and engaging.
Extra Content
- Documentary
- More character development
There is an over hour and a half documentary on the film, it’s interesting and I watched many details about this movie.
It has more character development, and I love the extended version better.
And it wasn’t just Reed and Sue. The whole team gets more time to shine. You see more of their individual struggles, their personalities, how they deal with these crazy powers they suddenly have. It’s like, in the theatrical version, they were just cardboard cutouts of superheroes. But in the extended cut, they actually feel like real people.
Now, I know some folks were disappointed that there wasn’t a third “Fantastic Four” movie, especially after “Rise of the Silver Surfer.” And yeah, that movie had its problems, but I gotta say, the Silver Surfer was pretty darn cool. But this extended edition of the first film? It makes me appreciate the whole thing a bit more. It’s like, this is the movie they should have released in the first place, on July 8, 2005. It’s a shame it took so long to get this version out there.
In the end, I gotta say, if you’re a “Fantastic Four” fan, or even just a superhero movie fan in general, you owe it to yourself to check out this extended edition. It might not be perfect, but it’s a major improvement over the original. It’s a richer, more satisfying experience. So yeah, go ahead and give it a watch. You might be surprised at how much more you enjoy it.
