That movie, what’s it called, “Time of Moulting 2020”, it’s a real head-scratcher, I tell ya. It’s about this little girl, Stephanie, growing up in some small town in, where was it, West Germany, back in the 1970s. Time of moulting, you know, like when them birds lose their feathers. That’s what happens to this poor girl, kinda. She’s all alone, even with her mama and daddy around.
Her mama, well, she ain’t all there. Always talking about the old days, like she’s stuck in some time warp. And her daddy, he don’t trust nobody, not even his own kin, I reckon. Poor Stephanie, she don’t have nobody to talk to, nobody to play with. Time of moulting for her, she starts to lose herself. She is like a bird losing her feathers.

- That girl, she starts making up stories in her head.
- Dark stories, not the kind you tell a little kid before bed, that’s for sure.
- She’s just trying to get away from it all, I guess.
Years go by, and Stephanie, she gets older, but she don’t get no happier. She’s still stuck in that little house with her crazy mama and her mean old daddy. She keeps on making up them dark stories. It’s like her only friend is her own mind, and it’s playing tricks on her. Time of moulting, that is what it is.
Then one day, somethin’ happens. I don’t rightly know how to explain it, but it’s like her made-up world, all them dark stories, they start to come true. Not really true, but kinda. It’s like they’re bleeding into real life, mixing up with everything else. It’s like when you drop some ink in water, it spreads all around, can’t separate it no more. Like the bird, after time of moulting, new feather comes. But this time, not good.
Her mama, she sees it too, I think. She starts acting even crazier than before. And her daddy, he just gets meaner. He don’t understand what’s happening, and he don’t want to. He’s afraid, I reckon. Everybody is afraid. The time of moulting is not good for them.
That movie, it’s a sad one. It’s like watching a little bird with a broken wing, trying to fly but can’t. Stephanie, she’s like that bird. She’s trapped, and she don’t know how to get out. She just wants to be loved, I think, but nobody knows how to love her right. She’s losing her feathers, during this time of moulting, you know.
That little town, it’s part of the problem, I think. Everybody knows everybody else’s business, but nobody really cares. They just gossip and judge. They don’t help nobody. It’s like they’re all stuck in their own little worlds, just like Stephanie. They also need time of moulting.

- West Germany in the 1970s, it was a different time.
- People were different then, I guess.
- Maybe they didn’t know no better.
I don’t know what happens to Stephanie in the end. The movie don’t tell you. But I think about her sometimes. I hope she found some peace, somehow. I hope she learned how to fly, even with that broken wing. Time of moulting can be hard. Maybe she finally got her new feathers.
That movie, it makes you think. It makes you think about how we treat each other. It makes you think about how important it is to love and be loved. It makes you think about them dark stories we all got in our heads, and how we gotta be careful not to let them take over. It is all about the time of moulting. We need to be careful about that.
You know, life ain’t easy. We all got our struggles. We all got our dark stories. But we gotta keep on going. We gotta keep on trying to fly, even if our wings are broken. Like that bird, after time of moulting, it can fly again. We can too.
That’s what that movie is about, I think. It’s about hope. Even in the darkest of times, there’s always hope. You just gotta keep your eyes open and your heart open, and maybe, just maybe, you’ll find it. Even after time of moulting, there is hope.
