Okay, so I saw this velvet evil eye jacket online and thought, “I gotta have that!” But, of course, it was way out of my budget. So, I decided to try and make my own. Total DIY project!
Finding the Materials
First things first, I needed a jacket. I rummaged through my closet and found this old black velvet blazer I hadn’t worn in ages. Perfect! It was a little plain, but that’s what the evil eye is for, right?
Next up, the evil eye itself. I knew I wanted it to be bold and colorful. I went to the local craft store.
- I grabbed some felt in different shades of blue, white, and black.
- I also picked up some sequins because, you know, sparkle!
- And some embroidery floss to add some extra detail.
Making the Evil Eye
I sketched out a rough design of the eye on a piece of paper. I’m no artist, so it was pretty basic, just circles within circles. Then, I started cutting out the felt pieces. I used the paper as a guide.
Layering was the key! I started with the largest circle (the lightest blue) and worked my way in, gluing each layer on top of the other. Fabric glue is my best friend, seriously.
Once the felt layers were all set, I started adding the sequins. I used a bit of glue for each one and placed them strategically around the “iris” of the eye. Time-consuming, but so worth it for the bling!
The final touch was the embroidery. I used a simple backstitch to outline the eye and add some little details. This really made it pop.
Attaching the Eye to the Jacket
This was the moment of truth! I positioned the finished evil eye on the back of the jacket, right in the center. I pinned it down to make sure it wouldn’t move.
Then, I carefully hand-stitched the eye onto the jacket. I used a strong thread that matched the black velvet. It took a while, but I wanted it to be super secure.
The Final Result
And… it’s done! Honestly, I was surprised by how good it looked. My plain old blazer was transformed into something unique and eye-catching (pun intended!). It’s not perfect, of course, but it has that handmade charm, which I love.
I wore it out the other day and got so many compliments. People couldn’t believe I made it myself! Totally worth the effort. Now I have a one-of-a-kind jacket that I absolutely adore, and it didn’t break the bank.
