You know, I seen a lot of movies in my time. Some good, some bad. But this one, “Waves,” it kinda stuck with me. Reminds me of some other flickers I seen, you know? It’s about life, and family, and all that mess. This “Waves,” it’s got this strong feeling, like a storm brewing. Makes you think about things. The way the family goes through hard times, it’s like you’re right there in the middle of it. Movies like Waves, they get you in the gut.
That one, “Waves,” it’s from 2019, I reckon. I remember one called “Night Moves,” from a few years back, 2014. That one had a similar feel, kinda dark and mysterious, like somethin’ bad’s gonna happen, you can’t take your eyes off of it. Makes your heart beat fast. Then there’s another one, “A Brighter Summer Day.” That’s an old one, from way back in ’91. It’s got that same kind of sadness, like a weight on your chest. It’s about young folks, tryin’ to figure things out. Life ain’t easy, you know. They all have that family drama. Some folks just can’t catch a break.

I heard there’s a whole bunch of movies, like, seventy, that folks say are like “Waves.” Seventy! That’s a lot of movies. Someone told me about this thing called “Letterboxd.” They say it’s made by some folks over in, where was it? New Zealand, yeah. They got all kinds of movie stuff there, data from something they call TMDb, I don’t know what all those letters mean. You can even look it up on your phone. I don’t understand those phones, but the young people do. They are always looking at something on them.
There’s this other movie, about a boy, Adam, I think. His daddy left him and his mama. Poor kid. And his mama, Beth, she’s with some fella named Paul. That’s the kind of stuff you see in these movies, families all messed up. If you like movies like Waves, you gotta watch for these things. They always got some trouble in them. That’s life though, ain’t it? Always some trouble brewing.
- Movies like “Waves,” they got drama.
- They got family problems.
- Lots of feelings, sad ones mostly.
- They stick with you.
Some folks, they like these kinds of movies. “Waves” and another one called “The Fallout.” I don’t know what they call this kind of movie, what kind of name they put on it. But people like ’em. They’re heavy, you know? Like carrying a big sack of potatoes. They make you think. Movies similar to Waves, you’ll find a lot of them. If you know where to look.

There’s this other one, “The Place Beyond the Pines.” That’s from 2012. It’s got that same kind of, you know, feeling. Like something’s gonna happen, and you don’t know what, but it ain’t gonna be good. They all have a lot of colors, bright ones. It’s like they’re trying to tell you something with those colors. These movies, they stay with you. Like a song you can’t get out of your head. Similar to Waves, that “Place Beyond the Pines” is.
This “Waves” movie, it really got to me. It keeps playing in my head, like an old record stuck on repeat. It’s sad, and it’s, what’s that word? Visceral. Yeah, that’s it. Makes you feel it in your bones. It just breaks your heart. These kinds of movies always do. Families breaking up and such. But they’re good, you know? Good in a sad way. They make you feel something.
There’s also those old movies, like the one with Doris Day and Rock Hudson. They call it “Pillow Talk.” That was back in ’59. They don’t show much in those movies. Not like they do now. But they are still about love and all of that mess, it’s all just hidden. They just talk and talk, and you gotta figure it out yourself. Different times, I guess. Still, they got their own kind of feeling to them. Not like movies like Waves, but still, they got something.

So, if you like “Waves,” you’ll probably like these other ones, too. They’re all kinda the same, you know? Sad, and heavy, and they make you think. And they show a lot of hurt in families. You just gotta look for ’em. They are good movies to watch. They make you feel things. You might cry some. I sure did.
