Today, I wanted to mess around and make some sound effects, specifically the kind you’d hear in a comic book when someone punches a wall. You know, those exaggerated “BAM” or “POW” sounds.
So, first, I searched for some royalty-free sound effects online, I found a bunch of websites with sound effects for punching. These are sounds you can use without getting into trouble. Some were labeled “cartoonish,” which is exactly what I needed.
Next, I started to listen through some of these sound effects. Some were just plain punches, but others had that over-the-top, comic book feel. They had names like “boings,” “clangs,” and, “slaps”. I downloaded a few that I thought were perfect.
Once I got the sound effects, I put them into my project, I used some sound editing software to make them fit just right. I messed around with the timing and volume until it sounded like a real comic book panel.
I also learned that in comics, they use words like “Pow!” and “Boom!” to show these sound effects. It’s called onomatopoeia. The idea is to make the sound come alive on the page. It got me thinking about how I could add that kind of visual element to my project, too.
Then, I did some more reading and found out that old TV shows used to do something similar. When someone got punched, they’d cut to a screen with a big “Biff” or “Bam” drawn on it. It was their way of bringing comic book sounds to life on TV. That’s pretty cool, and it gave me some more ideas for my project.
After messing around with different sound effects and visuals, I finally got something I was happy with. It really felt like I had created a comic book punch sound, just like I wanted. It wasn’t just the sound but also the whole idea of making it feel like it jumped out of a comic book page.
This whole thing was a lot of fun. I got to play around with sounds and even learned a bit about how they do it in comics and old TV shows. It’s cool to see how you can bring something as simple as a punch to life with just the right sound.
