So, the other day I was playing Project Zomboid, right? I’d been at it for, like, 20 days in-game, and I suddenly realized I’d never given my character a proper name. It was just some random gibberish, and I was not about to start my journey with a stupid name. It was really bugging me, you know?
First, I tried to find a way to change the name in-game. I went into the game where you can invite other survivors or give orders, but guess what? The option to change the name under player stats was all grayed out. Couldn’t click it, couldn’t do anything. Super annoying.
Then I went online to check out the server panel, I logged in. I found the customization page, changed the password. I also found there was an option for changing the username, but that’s not what I wanted. I needed to change my character’s name in multiplayer.
Next, I thought, maybe there’s a mod for this. So, I went hunting for mods. I found this one called Necroforge, which sounded promising. People online were saying it could do all sorts of stuff. Installed it, fired it up, but nope, didn’t work for changing names. I also found other comments where they said you can change the name before starting the game, but that was no good for me. I was already 20 days in!
After that, I started digging into the game files. I figured the name had to be stored somewhere, right? I checked the map files, thinking maybe it was in one of those, but I couldn’t make heads or tails of it. It was all just a bunch of code that I didn’t understand.
Finally, I decided to ask around online. I found some forums where people were talking about the same problem. Some said it was impossible, others said there might be a way, but no one had a clear answer. Some folks were like, “Why bother? It’s just a name.” But hey, it was important to me!.
I spent hours on this, trying different things, reading through forums, and messing with the game files. In the end, I found that I can change my character’s name before I start the game, but I could not find a solution to change the name in the existing game. So I decided to start a new character with a new name. It was a bit of a bummer to lose all that progress, but at least my character finally had a name I liked. What a day!
