Okay, so, I got really into this comic book thing called “I Hate Fairland”. It’s by this guy Skottie Young, who’s, like, a big deal in the comic world, apparently. He’s won awards and stuff, so I figured it had to be good, right? Anyway, I started looking into it, and man, it’s a wild ride.
First, I checked out some interviews with Skottie Young just to get a feel for the guy and what he was thinking when he made this comic. Turns out, he’s got a pretty twisted sense of humor, which I’m all about.
Then, I dove into the comics themselves. I started with the main series, “I Hate Fairyland”. It’s about this girl, Gert, who gets stuck in this magical world called Fairyland. Sounds fun, right? Wrong. She’s been there for, like, decades and is totally over it. She just wants to go home, but she’s stuck in the body of a little kid, so it’s extra messed up.
- Started reading the main series: I read through the first few volumes, and it’s just pure chaos. Gert is brutal, man. She’s got this giant axe, and she’s not afraid to use it. The art is super cartoony, but there’s also a ton of gore. It’s a weird mix, but it works.
- Found some cool artwork: I stumbled upon this panel by some artist named Brett Bean. I think it was from issue #20 of the main series. It was so awesome. I saved it to my inspiration folder.
- Checked out the anthology series: I found out there’s this other thing called “Untold Tales of I Hate Fairyland”. It’s a bunch of short stories by different artists, all set in the same universe. I grabbed a copy that collected all five issues.
- Read “Last Gert Standing”: And recently, I finished reading “I HATE FAIRYLAND vol. 6: LAST GERT STANDING” which is written by Skottie Young himself and also drawn by him. It was a good read and very engaging.
Basically, I got completely sucked into this “I Hate Fairyland” world. It’s funny, it’s violent, it’s totally messed up, and I love it. There is a fly named Larry in the story, he is such a good partner with Gert, I really love their interaction.
If you’re into dark humor and crazy, over-the-top violence, you should totally check it out. Just be warned, it’s not for the faint of heart!
I will definitely keep reading, and maybe start collecting some of the variant covers. They look pretty sweet. I am really curious about what Skottie Young will do next, I am his fan now. That’s it. Hope you enjoy it.
