Okay, so, “Sound of Metal” ending, right? I remember watching this movie a while back and that ending, man, it really stuck with me. Let me tell you how I went through it.
First, I found the movie on a streaming service. I’d heard some buzz about it, especially about Riz Ahmed’s performance, so I was curious. I settled in one night, got some snacks, and hit play.
The movie throws you right into Ruben’s life, this drummer in a metal band. He’s living this intense, loud life, and then BAM! His hearing starts going. It was pretty scary, to be honest, seeing things from his perspective.
So, the whole movie, I’m watching Ruben go through this crazy journey. He joins this deaf community, learns sign language, and you really see him struggling to adapt. You’re rooting for him, you know? You want him to find peace.
The Big Decision
Then comes the part where he gets the cochlear implant surgery. He’s pinning all his hopes on this, thinking it’ll fix everything. He’s thinking, “I can go back to my old life, to my music, to Lou.”
And this is where it really got to me. He gets the implants, and they’re… not what he expected. Everything sounds distorted, metallic, not at all like natural sound. It’s heartbreaking.I remembered I put my hand on my chest at the moment.
That Final Scene…
The ending, though… wow. He’s sitting on a bench in Europe, all alone. He’s listening to these church bells, but they sound awful through the implants. He’s so frustrated and disappointed.
Then, he does something that just blew my mind. He takes the processors off. He removes the implants.
And then… silence. Complete silence. He sits there, just experiencing the quiet. He closes his eyes, and you can almost see a sense of peace finally wash over him.
For me, that ending wasn’t about him giving up. It was about him finally accepting his deafness, finding peace in the silence instead of fighting *’s powerful.
It was a real gut-punch of an ending, but in a good way. It made me think, and it stayed with me long after the credits rolled. That’s a sign of a good movie, right?
