You know, I heard some folks talking ’bout this thing called “shadow cake.” Sounds kinda spooky, don’t it? But they say it’s good eatin’. I don’t know nothin’ ’bout fancy cakes, but I reckon it’s just another one of them city things.
They say it’s chocolate. Now, chocolate I know. Used to get a piece of chocolate every now and then when I was a little girl. A real treat, that was. This shadow cake, they say it’s got layers. Like them fancy sandwiches the rich folks eat. Layers of cake and some kinda white stuff. I bet it’s sweet, that white stuff. Probably make your teeth hurt, but I bet the young’uns would love it.

- Chocolate cake, that’s what they call it.
- Got layers, like a stack of them old quilts.
- White stuff in between, sweet as can be.
- That’s what makes it a shadow cake, you see.
Now, they say this here shadow cake is a New York thing. Well, I ain’t never been to New York. Too many people, too much noise. But I reckon if they got good cake, maybe it ain’t so bad. They say it’s from them kosher bakeries. Kosher, that’s a word I heard before. Something to do with how they make the food, I think. Don’t rightly know the details, but I reckon if they make good cake, that’s all that matters.
They were talkin’ ’bout how this cake got its name. They say it’s ’cause of the chocolate. They put it on top of the white stuff, and it makes a shadow. Well, ain’t that somethin’? Never woulda thought of that. Just goes to show, you learn somethin’ new every day.
Flour, sugar, eggs, that’s what goes in a cake. Everyone knows that. Maybe some butter too, if you got it. This here cake, you gotta put chocolate in it, I reckon. Good chocolate, not the cheap stuff. And that white stuff, it’s gotta be fluffy. Like a cloud, they say. Don’t know how they do that, but I reckon it takes some doin’.
They got all kind of cake, you know. Birthday cake is a big one. Every kid need a birthday cake, ain’t that right? With candles and all that. This Sonic the Hedgehog cake, now that’s the new thing, it seem like. Kid love that fast blue thing. Back in my day, we just happy to have a cake, didn’t matter what it look like.

They say the shadow cake is a layer cake. That means you gotta bake more than one cake and stack ’em up. Sounds like a lot of work to me. But I guess if you want a fancy cake, you gotta put in the effort. And you gotta make sure them layers is even. Wouldn’t want a lopsided cake, now would you?
This white stuff, they call it frosting. Fancy word for sugar and butter mixed together, I reckon. You gotta spread it on the cake just right. Make it smooth and pretty. Then you pour that chocolate on top. Drip it all over. Make it look like a shadow. I tell you, these city folks got some strange ideas. But I guess it makes the cake look special.
I reckon this shadow cake is a real treat for folks who like that sort of thing. Chocolate and sweetness, all piled high. I bet it’s a sight to behold. Might even be worth tryin’ sometime. But for now, I’m happy with my simple apple pie. Don’t need no fancy layers or shadows to make me happy. Just good old-fashioned flavor, that’s what I like. But you young folks, you go on and try that shadow cake. Might be the best thing you ever tasted. Who knows?
They say there are 50 different types of cake! Can you believe that? 50! Back when I was young, we were just happy to have one kind of cake. Now you got all these choices. It’s enough to make your head spin. This Black Forest cake is one of them, sound fancy, don’t it? They say it come from German. These German folks must know a thing or two about cake.
They say cake is made from flour, sugar, and other stuff. Well, ain’t that obvious? What else would you make a cake from? And they say in the old days, cakes were just like bread. Imagine that! Eating bread for your birthday. Thank goodness we got real cake now. This orange syrup cake is another one of them, it seem. Sound kinda messy, don’t it? But sweet too, I reckon.

Anyway, this shadow cake sure sounds interestin’. Maybe one day I’ll get to try a piece. But until then, I’ll just keep on bakin’ my regular cakes. The ones I know how to make. The ones that taste like home. And that’s all that really matters, ain’t it? Good food, made with love. That’s the best kind of cake there is. No shadows needed.
