Okay, so, I’ve been meaning to write this post for a while now, and today I finally got around to it. As an animator, people always ask me what kind of gifts we like. Well, I decided to put my thoughts into action and compile a list, then tried them out myself.
First off, I went online and searched for what people are recommending. I found a bunch of stuff on Amazon, you know, the usual gift cards, pet supplies, video games, and some “gift ideas.” None of that really screamed “animator” to me, though. Then I saw some job postings for animators, which got me thinking about what employers are looking for. It seems like having a good portfolio and some computer skills is key.
Then, I thought about the actual tools. I got my hands on an Illo Sketchbook. It’s not too big and not too small, pretty good for working anywhere. I also tried out Pixar’s The Animator’s Sketchbook. That one is awesome if you’re planning out an animation.

For drawing, I used Prismacolor Erasable Colored Pencils. They are actually good if you are doing 2D stuff. I also tested an 18-piece pencil set from Pro Art. It’s a really cheap option and does the job for traditional drawing.

I even read somewhere that some big-shot animators didn’t start until they were older. Like that Hayao Miyazaki guy from Studio Ghibli. He made “My Neighbor Totoro” and “Spirited Away”. I guess it is never too late to start in this animation thing.
Conclusion after all the doing
After trying out all this stuff, I realized that the best gifts for animators are the ones that help them create. Whether it’s a nice sketchbook, some quality pencils, or even just some inspiration from other animators’ work, it’s all about fueling their passion. So, if you’re looking to buy a gift for your animator friend, that is my take. It is all about tools and inspiration to help them with their craft.
